5 Things I Love about Bantayan Island

Summer is not over yet. With the scorching heat and humid air, the beach is our best option.

We took the early morning flight to Cebu via Cebu Pacific Air using the travel fund we were not able to use last April. Just a piece of advice, never ever cancel a flight or if you may, please be careful with the rebooking because at least 3 of the customer service representatives in Cebu Pac are not that familiar with the process and you will end up being charged on top of the charges you have to bear when you cancelled the flight. (Oh well, just don’t cancel)

Moving on, since this was a summer getaway with my college friends, budget won’t be my focus. Good thing we had our transpo for free. Thanks to you Liezl and your connections. 😍 Mactan is 3 hours  away to port of Hagnaya, Then 1 hour Ferry ride to port of Sta Fe, Bantayan Island. Ferry costs 170 + 10 pesos terminal fee.

So here’s my list of 5 things I love most about Bantayan Island:

1. Placid Beach

We booked an overnight stay in Beach Placid, one of the best spot to capture the sunrise. The sea in front of the resort was placid, 2 days no waves.

They have a shuttle service from the port to resort so transfers won’t be a problem. I love that when we arrived the sea was super enticing and blue that you wanna jump in right away. But of course, it was past the hour of 12 and we are already starving.

Cost: 3,600 php/night for 6 pax

2. Love/Hate the Food in Beach Placid Resto.

I love the food, you can taste the difference from the usual dish. However, service was quite slow. Perhaps because of the probinsya feels. It was like everyday is a Sunday morning for the crew. Slow-mo.

3. Kind Bangkeros

We have no plans for the afternoon so we decided to do an island hopping. Though I am not sure it is really an island hopping because we only docked on one of the tour destinations which is still connected to the main island of Bantayan.

I find snorkeling fun, it is one of the things I looked forward to everytime I visit a place. Yes, I still enjoyed the snorkeling activity even when there’s not much coral garden and fishes to see on the spot where we parked. (Too bad)
We also ditched the second of the island hopping destination. We find it misleading when they still name an island virgin even if there’s already a resort built and charge you with soaring entrance fees. Pretty disappointing.

But thanks to our kind boatman, even with the communication gap, he really tried his best to understand what we want.

4. Locals

We met Ate Joan, receptionist from the Nature Park, which is one of the tour destination in our island hopping. For a minimum of 100 pesos, you’ll get to see the different amenities of the park and for an extra 100 pesos, you are free to use them. You can go swimming in the cave, fish spa, tour in their mini zoo and dive in the pool and you will be entertained by this witty and funny receptionist. Ate Joan became a friend and even joined us for dinner at Cafe del Mar.

5. Low-tide at night

The good news about the low-tide is you have at least a 100-meter stretch of beach front in the evening which is well lit. You could bring your music, go dancing, and sway your hair in the wind. Trust me, this is so much fun to do with the girls. Highlight of my Bantayan.

Travel 2014: El Nido and Puerto Princesa Palawan

El Nido

Now checking off my bucketlist: Puerto Princesa, Coron Palawan and now El Nido.

We stayed in the cozy house called Marikit Pensionne, which is just 3 minutes away from the beach where all the boatmen park their “tourist boats”.

El Nido offers 4 different tours (A,B,C,D). Ours was tour A and tour C. What I liked best was tour C which includes my favorite beaches which are not known to many and the other one is very hard to find. Nah, I’m just kidding but these two beaches are secret beach and hidden beach.

Most of the time, we were snorkeling with the fishes and swimming in the deep blue sea. But the fun part of the trip was the buffet lunch served by the boatmen. It was indeed the best seafood experience so far. Fruits were carved, designed to entice you and the grilled fish? Ooh lalala heaven in my mouth while you hear the relaxing sound of waves by the shore. It was indeed the best R&R.

We ended our trip in El Nido with a fun drinking session in our accommodation “Marikit Pensionne” on our second night.

IMG_4370

Next, Puerto Princesa City. We started of with a very early morning trip to the underground river. I have visited PPUR in 2011 and I know it’s not nice to say this, but there’s not much changes to see. But I would still recommend visiting PPUR for the first timers.

Moving on, everyone was already hungry for some real Palawan local cuisine, we indulge ourselves to a buffet lunch for only 200 pesos that includes our experience of eating Tamilok or what they call Wood worm found living inside the woods of Mangrove trees around Palawan. Don’t worry it’s not really a worm but a part of the mollusk family however, it resembles a worm. But it definitely tastes and feels like raw oysters.

That last afternoon in Puerto Princesa was quite quick. We had the City tour but due to time constraint we limit it to the best of best of what the City has to offer, that includes Pasalubungan Place (Goodies place). Hahah

By the way, our accommodation in Puerto Princesa was a newly constructed lodge which was not yet operational at that time. Owner came from Germany to open a business here in the Philippines. The lodge has a fresh and cozy feel whose owner’s number I won’t be able to provide due to my lost phone. But you may contact Marikit Pensionne, owner of both inn or lodge are pretty much related.

Anyhow, overall, the trip was worth it even in my case who have lost a phone.

Here’s a sample guide for you for El Nido – PPS:

Day 0 – 9 PM Arrival in PPS

1 AM Arrival in El Nido

Day 1 – Tour A

– Dinner Sea Slugs

Day 2 – Tour C

Day 3 – Underground River tour & PPS city tour

Day 4 – Departure

Accommodation (El Nido) – Marikit Pensionne

Due to the lost of my phone during the trip, I also lost my contact. Good thing they have a website which you could visit.

http://marikitpensionne.com/

Kuya Sonny, the owner of the pension house, arranged almost everything for us (Van transfers, Tour, Puerto Princesa tours and Accommodation) and even gave us a discount.

Thanks to you!

Seoul, South Korea in 7 days

Almost a year of planning and I have my eyes focused on one reward I could give to myself : Korea Trip with my ultimate travel buddy friend – Noel.

Seoul, South Korea is basically one of the cities you can do the “go-with-the-flow” itinerary. It’s nice to get lost and wander here. Transportation is not a problem and people are very much accommodating especially to tourists even if sometimes they don’t understand you.

Here are the amazing things I have experience:

IMG_3966

Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul – our entrance fee was free because they were holding the Chuseok festival on that day. On a regular day, the entrance fee would cost you 2000 KRW.

IMG_4009

The area of the palace is big so better wear comfy shoes for this.

Korean Baby

I definitely enjoyed observing people especially the little ones because they’re cute and cuddly. I wanna “gigil” as what the Filipinos would say.

Bukchon Hanok Village
Bukchon Hanok Village
The Bukchon Hanok Village – it’s nice to see the old houses preserved. You would notice how intricate every detail of the roofs and facade were made, it would definitely stand the test of time. If you are fond of plants/gardening/trees like me, you would also notice the abundance of Persimmon trees in some of the houses in Korea. One of which is in front of the guesthouse I was staying in Sinchon District. No entrance fee.

Gwanghwamun Square

Gwanghwamun Square – We found this historical site jam packed with Koreans and tourists on a Tuesday morning. We also found some of the families of the ones killed in the sinking of MV Sewol convened in the area with the placards. Though I didn’t understand, the families are pleading for help and justice. No entrance fee.

N Seoul Tower
N Seoul Tower
We went to N Seoul Tower for the lovers lockers and the 360 degree view of Korea. You would notice how big the city is and how many mountains you can hike in Seoul. If you wanna go up the tower it can cost you 10,000 KRW.

Nami Island
Nami Island
Nami Island – A country side destination somewhere near Seoul. If you are a K-Novela fan, I bet you can relate to this. But if you are like me, you would probably focus more on the colors of trees, the activities and squirrels you will find strolling with you in the Island. It’s really nice to spend the whole day here in Nami, especially if you are going here for a picnic. Entrance fee: 10,000 KRW; bring passport for discount.

K-Novela pose in Nami Island
K-Novela pose in Nami Island
After spending almost a whole day in Nami Island, we were suppose to visit the Garden of Morning Calm but the gates closes at 6 pm and I really wanted to see more of it so we decided to go back in Seoul instead and do some food tripping. On our way to Dongdaemun District, we came across a stream they call the Cheonggyecheon. The stream is a massive $900 million urban renewal project, initially criticized but eventually became popular to locals and tourists after the opening in 2005. No entrance fee.

Next day, my friend and I opted to go our separate solo trips. I went back to Gyeonggi-do to visit the Garden of Morning Calm while he went to Everland for amusement.

Garden of the Morning Calm
Garden of the Morning Calm
This is definitely my haven in Korea – The Garden of the Morning Calm, while Gardens by the Bay is my haven in SG. I enjoyed much of my alone time in this garden. This is pretty much the best place to reflect and pray. It is so calm and relaxing, every angle is heavenly filled with flowers, grass and pine trees. It is easier to breathe here. This is where spent my whole day, while drinking my favorite sikhye (rice drink)!

After spending some time with the trees, I followed my trail to Noryangjin market to visit my sea creature friends. This is pretty much like “Dampa” in the Philippines where you could buy and ask someone to cook it for you. Say hello to my octopus friends.

noryangjinIMG_4225

I spent the whole evening in the guesthouse after I felt that I’ve utilized my feet well the whole day. I made friends with some of the host and I met a photo journalist from Demotix who gave some advice about photography and told me stories about survival as a protester in Venezuela. Really interesting guy.

Our 5th day was entirely spent on Shopping. We went to COEX mall and the next thing we knew we are already hoarding some beauty products in Myeongdong. Prices are insanely cheaper and my sister would really love it here.

Our night was spent in Hongdae, which is the area known for arts and indie music. We craved for some Korean realness so we ate our hearts away with the authentic char-grilled Korean Barbecue while drinking Magkeolli (Korean rice wine). I must say, this will offset the days I opted not to eat in Korea aside from 711 goodies because my tastebuds are not really made for Kimchi.

food trip in Korea

For our last day, my friend and I went for our solo trips again. He went to experience the Spa for 18,000 won  while I visited the Dog Cafe in Myeongdong District. I can’t help but miss my dogs at home here. For 8,000 won you get to bond with the different breed of cute dogs and get a free iced tea as well.

Dog Cafe - Myeongdong

After which, I continued my shopping because I still have tons of things on my list. I met with my friend in the afternoon to bid Korea Kamsahamnida – Until the next season. I will definitely miss Korea and its fast Internet and cheap beauty products and most of all I will miss the friendly transportation and good weather. Lucky to experience Korea this year and I will definitely come back here to experience Spring!

Guimaras

Now this is a throwback.

Touchdown! Iloilo City. My suspicions were right and I was not even surprise when a group of men approached us and offered their jeep for a 5 minute ride for 200 pesos. Good thing it was only PHP 200 ( apprx US$5) but when we finally arrived at the wharf to ride a boat to Guimaras, they were already asking for PHP 8,000 (apprx US$200). Oh boy! That was totally insane. Imagine the one hour ferry ride from Bacolod to Iloilo was PHP 250 per head one way and now we are only talking about a 15 min ride and they were asking for PHP 8,000 already.

This is one of the reasons I have trust issues, oh man!. Of course my immediate response to this was a BIG NO. Just like that! Good thing our brains were all in sync with each other that we opted to do it the local way. Iloilo to Jordan (Capital of Guimaras) PHP 15 per person the #Pinasmile way! This is one of the reasons why I travel, to interact with the locals and experience new things.

Several minutes later, we found ourselves craving for some Guimaras realness. First stop? A restaurant called The Pitstop! We ordered the famous Mango Pizza and yes it was heaven in my mouth. The juiciness of the mango complements the crispiness of the crust partnered with my cucumber lemonade and I’m on high! Literally awesome! Must try! Gold seal!

Only in Guimaras
Only in Guimaras

With our full tummy and our cravings satisfied, we headed to the Trappist Monastery to give thanks to the Almighty who provided everything that we needed for this trip and for the never ending blessings we receive everyday. With all of these, I’m truly grateful.

trappist monastery

It’s afternoon in Guimaras and we were all dead tired from the early morning trip. Some of us slept the whole afternoon, while Liezl, Ge and I went to Guisi Lighthouse which was known to be the 2nd oldest lighthouse in the Philippines. The now rusting metal that stands at the edge of a cliff continues to tell its story. The ruined facade surrounding the vicinity, intricately carved walls and the open windows are just a few intriguing characteristics of the lighthouse that would make you wanna visit the history.

While it was already past the hour of 5 when we left, I couldn’t help but notice how the sun was too eager to set. Like a snap it was dark and all I could see was the back light of the tricycle we were riding. I took the back seat. Literally back and the road was pitch black and calm. Most of the time there was no signal. Good thing I wasn’t alone and it was never scary. lol

Guisi Lighthouse

That night, I went for a night swimming at Raymen’s beach where we stayed. A lot people were swimming also and I had chance to have a nice chat with a lady who was also a tourist from Siargao (Surfing capital of the Philippines). We had a bountiful dinner as well. Food was cheap at the cafe of the resort so we were all super full and ready to have a bonding time before we go to sleep.

The morning was kind of swift. We had breakfast then off to an Island hopping tour which cost PHP 700  + PHP150 per succeeding hour.

Island Hopping Ready

We had a nice swimming session in the different islets of Guimaras and one of them is the Ave Maria Island.

Ave Maria Island, Guimaras
Ave Maria Island, Guimaras

Just an island away from Ave Maria, we encountered a pawikan (Sea Turtle) which I’m very much not willing to touch because I might cause the poor animal stress. Anyway, Guimaras also have their own little version of Underground Cave and it’s nice to swim here though the rocks are quite sharp you might wanna wear slippers. After spending time swimming in the cave, we went back to the resort for check out and head over the “Pasalubong” place of Guimaras to buy some goodies for take home.

Cave

Mangoes from Guimaras are the sweetest, in fact these mangoes are served in the White House and the Buckingham Palace.

Basically, that’s sums up our quick Bacolod – Guimaras trip. Till our next adventure! Ciao!

Travel 2014: Bacolod

Seat sale? Boom! Where to go? Uh-oH. People are very intense in booking for Boracay and etc. More so,  I’ve been compelled to book for anything but Boracay because of the following reasons: 1. Been there 2. Been there many times 3. There’s more to see in the Philippines.

Scrolling through the site of Cebu Pac. Alas we found the place to be –  Bacolod! And the goal for this trip is to eat Inasal as much as we can! Just Kidding

Anyway, booking a trip to Bacolod was nevertheless the best impulsive decision I’ve ever made. At first, many of us are hesitant because most of the people I know would say that there’s nothing extraordinary to see in Bacolod since it’s a City. Nothing special blah blah, it’s just like Manila blah blah. Well, as per my experience, yes it is quite true. There’s not much to see inside the City except to splurge on their mouth watering Inasal, Napaleones, La Paz Batchoy and many delicious local specials. On the other hand, there’s more to see outside Bacolod City. Let me tour you through the photos from Day 1 to Day 4.

Touchdown! New Silay airport and we were fetched by a friendly Kuya Raffy who’s a family friend of one of my friends. Thanks to you Liezl. Yay to free transpo!

Touchdown: New Silay Airport

First stop is to Check in at the Circle Inn at the City proper of Bacolod. The rooms are quite spacious and the staffs are very friendly, nice and accommodating. Also, it is very affordable! Here’s my Gold Seal for you Circle Inn.

After a few stretch and refreshments we began The Negros tour. First stop is The Negros Museum. The museum showcases the vast history of Negros from the 34 Governors to the passé artefacts of Sugarcane to the Piyaya Making and lastly, Mara Montelibano’s personal collection of dolls from over 60 countries around the world. Some of the collection of dolls are quite effusive and fascinating. It was kept in an air conditioned area in the museum. The thing is, every now and then, Mara would still go to the museum to see her dolls and also to add more to the collection.

IMG_3342

Bacolod is also holding Masskara Festival yearly, particularly during October  which showcases resplendence in vivid colors of different costumes and artsy masks. According to the history – Masskara Festival began in the 1980’s during the crisis period when the sugarcane industry, being the primary source of Agricultural crop became low due to the introduction of other sweeteners in the US. Also, it was also during those time that a tragedy happened that resulted to a loss of 700 lives. Being known as the City of Smiles, the Government of Bacolod pursued on finding a way to commiserate and at the same time pull out the residents of Bacolod out of glum and sorrow. They went on to the idea of holding a festival in the midst of tragedies to show that the people of the city are survivors and tough.

Moreover, Bacolod City – is well known as the Land of Sweet People or in filipino Malalambing. I don’t know exactly the reason behind this – or is it because of the Sugarcane or what? HAHAHA I should have stayed in Bacolod and interact with the locales a little more to experience what it’s like to be coddled by a Bacolodnon.

Moving on, we were already starved for some Negros realness therefore we opted to go to Mambukal Resort – an hour drive from Bacolod City to Murcia. According to the guide, Mambukal serves as the gateway to the Mt. Kanlaon National park. It was developed by a Japanese Architect named Kokichi Paul Ishawata in 1927. Mambukal resort boasts for its interesting natural resources and dipping hot springs, falls that flows in a gamut of 7 waterfalls and the lagoon for recreational purposes. You would also find other interesting features of the resort such as its lush forestry filled with tropical and semi-tropical trees and different kinds of butterflies and fruit eating bats. They also provide accommodations if you really want to experience true relaxation, peace and quiet. Mambukal Resort is the place to be. Disclaimer though, Make sure to get enough sleep before climbing the 7 Waterfalls, one of my friends fainted whilst we were singing the ABS CBN station ID song “Pinasmile” . (Highlight) Oh and by the way, we ate in one of the stalls inside the resort since we were already hungry during lunch. We decided to eat at the first restaurant that we saw who serves a Halo-halo that was made with real mixed fruits. It was my first time to try Halo-halo with avocado by the way.

Mambukal Resort

After a tiring day, we went back to the hotel to get some sleep since our day started very early and our tour was kind of extreme for some of us. For dinner, we went for Aida’s Manokan located at the Manokan Country Fr. M. Ferrero St. cor Rizal St. Bacolod City. Our experience of their Inasal was heaven and to me it was worth the return. After dinner, we went to the Art District to have some drinks. It was a Thursday so I’m not really expecting much. I just needed a drink and my friends.

DAY 2

At 8 in the morning we were already on our way to the New Silay airport to fetch some of my friends from Manila. We had brunch at El Ideal Bakery after. I will never forget the Guava Pie. It’s like Christmas in my mouth because of the cinnamon and  the guava was my childhood memories. Yes it is definitely a must try!

Lakawon Beach

Located at Cadiz City in the northern part of Negros Occidental, we went on a 2 hour road trip to experience the beach at Lakawon, a banana shaped island. Though the sand in the island is white, it is not yet commercially develop and a little small to be compared to Boracay Island, somehow it is more akin to a sandbar. The multi-hued color of the sea was pretty much relaxing to the eyes. We stayed not too long because we wanted to catch the sunset at The Ruins. We left Lakawon at 3 PM and went straight to Balay Negrense – a museum in Silay City which showcases the life of a 19th century sugar baron. Owned by a Mr. Victor Gaston, influenced by the americans, the house was a “Bahay na Bato” which was built in 1897 and was donated by Msgr Guillermo Ma Gaston to the Philippine Tourism Authority in 1992.

Balay Negrense
Balay Negrense

The tour was a little quick, as I said, we wanted to catch the sunset at The Ruins. We were so lucky we did and I have to say, the 80 PHP entrance fee was worth it because the guide Roger Lacson, gave very interesting facts about the history of The Ruins. The bottom line of the story was the Foundation was made out of eggs and that the landscaper hired by the owner Mariano Ledesma Lacson was a spy and the rest of the story was definitely worth hearing first hand. Nah, I’m just lazy but yes it is definitely worth the trip to Negros. Thou shall not miss The Ruins.

The Ruins
We ended our second day by dining at Atoy’s which is really disappointing because the service is so slow. Anyhow, Next in the itinerary is Guimaras which my next blog will cover. I know this has been too much and too long and I’m very happy to end this now. See yah on the next. I’m not done yet. Hahaha

Baler

A new force has pulled me last month and that’s the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Yes it is Surfing! I’ve been wanting to try surfing since last year but I did not have the guts and the effort to do it. Lucky me, someone invited me for a weekend in Baler. Stunned by the majestic big rocky islets and frothe-ish kind of waves splashing through each crevice, I climbed the lighthouse of Dicasalarin Cove just to get an overview of what Baler, Aurora has to offer. Touring the town of Baler gave me a hint that it’s no ordinary tourist spot. Baler has its own identity, the waves has its own story and the rocks speaks history.

Dicasalarin Cove
Dicasalarin Cove

Located 230 kilometres Northeast of Manila passing thru zigzags and mountains, a lavish green and blue welcomes you and finally what you imagined nature would be up close is now staring at you , enticing you and alluring right before your eyes. At least to a City girl like me.

Walk-Hike-Climb-Swim-and-Surf are basically the activities you could do in Baler. What did I miss? Oh someone told me you could also ride a horse by the beach something that mimics that of a hollywood movie.

For starters we spent our Saturday touring the town. Climbing a tree is not a first time to me but climbing a Millennial Balete Tree and swinging by its roots like a monkey was worth the Leg numb I experienced during the motorcycle ride on the way.

Moving on, Ditumabo Falls, also known as the Mother Falls is quite a walk from the drop off/ parking area and if you are such a nature seeker like me, you will surely love the river crossing, walking under the canopies of humongous trees and seeing different kinds of Birds. Pretty much like my own version of “Big Year”. The cold-crystal clear torrent rushing from the waterfalls is surely an answer for the scorching heat of sun and the obstacle rocks along the way. Indeed, the trek is definitely worth it (worth the PAGOD) but it will definitely starve you. So, Good thing there is Gerry Shan’s at the town proper, a buffet restaurant for only 185 PHP per Head. Not bad right? They serve all sorts of Filipino food and desserts that will absolutely cure you grumbling tummy. Oh yes!

Mother Falls
Mother Falls

More so, only a street away from Gerry Shan’s is the house of Manuel L. Quezon and the Baler Museum – the answer to your curiosity about the history and foundation of Baler, Aurora which was once part of Quezon Province.

Following the sound of the ocean, we went for a quick rock climbing (not a pro) in Diguisit Rock Formation. The dare-devil in me will not say No to this. (lol) Just looking at the waves from the rock formations made me crave for some real action. I mean SURFing action. .

BALER

So voila! S-U-R-F-I-N-G. I gave my self a pat for not giving up and for drinking  tons of salty- water. Oh and I had fun even though I only had 5 sec successful balance in the board and guess what, not bad for a first timer huh. :)) and it’s only 350php per session/hour. What a delight! 🙂 Also, I came back a few weeks after that first time surfing and I could say that my Surfing Career (LOL) has progressed. Hahaha kidding! Well, seriously, surfing is fun to learn. I suggest you try it for yourself. You know what they say in life; You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf. 🙂 #notconnected #sorrynotsorryBaler

Magnificent Coron

Back in 2012, my friend Noel and I booked a trip going to Coron, Palawan. We took advantage of the Cebu Pacific piso fare promo for a total of 1100 php/pax roundtrip ticket to Coron Palawan. Palawan has been my dream destination  place here in the Philippines since forever. Luckily I was able to visit Puerto Princesa in 2011 with my friend Barry Viloria and finally, I was able to visit Coron Palawan August this year. Hopefully I will soon visit El Nido, Palawan to complete my Palawan bucket list.

Coron is a municipality in Palawan which covers the eastern part of Busuanga island and other Coron Islands and islets nearby. It is well known for its diving spots that shows dozen of Japanese sunken warships. As a matter of fact, Coron, Palawan was listed at the Forbes Magazine’s one of the top 10 best scuba diving sites in the world.

Day 1.

MT. TAPYAS

A 730+ steps climb up, other than the dark cirrus clouds, there was a beautiful sun kissing the horizon at sunset that welcomed us at the top of Mt. Tapyas. At the top stood a huge cross which is I believe being used during the Holy Week ceremonies for Catholics here in the Philippines, also welcoming us is a lush of green mountains and inviting view of the ocean and islands that would really make you say “wow” and definitely make you wanna go jump. (kidding)

View from Mt. Tapyas
View from Mt. Tapyas

Passing by several people on our climb down, most of them would ask  how far more do they have to go, well the trick to this is to say – “You’re almost there, 3 mins from here...” lol even though it’s still 30 mins away, this way they would surely keep going. hahaha. I know this is kind of mean but it is really helpful you know. Anyhow, next stop is Cashew Factory – Well, I love nuts and I really love Cashews however I think Cashew nuts in Coron are gold. My friend, Noel insisted that we just get 2 packs because according to him, Cashew nuts from Antipolo is way more cheaper than what is being offered in Coron. I understand that their target market are tourist and foreigners but hey it’s really pricey but the good news here is they gave us the sample packs and I’m grateful but it’s still expensive..

Maquinit Hotspring

Super init – Playing between 39-40 degrees Celsius, Maquinit Hot spring is a salt water hotspring and is definitely not advisable to people with hyper tension.  At first I was a bit skeptic because it really is hot, I can imagine boiling an egg here in no time but nonetheless, it is truly relaxing once you get adjusted to the temperature. The entrance to Maquinit Hotspring is 150php/pax, There’s no available fresh water in the place for your after- wash so you better be ready to stay wet and salty (yum- lol) until you get to your accommodations. We stayed in Maquinit until 7pm before we head back to the city proper for some yummy dinner.

Maquinit Hotspring
Maquinit Hotspring

For dinner, I ate Seafood Spaghetti it is really yummy and the serving size is good for sharing. I forgot the name of the resto but it is somewhere near the Plaza. We ended the night early because my friend was really tired and had no decent sleep yet.

DAY 2.

Sunblock (/)

Sunglasses (/)

Swimsuit (/)

Sun (?)

Yes, it was a drizzling Sunday but not even a drop could ever stop us from touring the majestic and magnificent Coron. Heading to Lualhati park for our boat ride, we rented goggles for snorkeling because we didn’t wanna miss the awesome coral gardens. First stop, Siete Pecados – why it is called Siete Pecados? is a story you should hear first hand from the people of Coron. 🙂

2nd Stop – Kayangan Lake

It was a 10 minute hike up. A beautiful view of multi-hued waters and rocky islets will surprise you. It was such an amazing view and surreal to find one that looks like just a painting, truly a God’s masterpiece. No wonder everyone taking a Coron trip has a “mandatory” PHOTO of this. Well uhmm kindly excuse our fats.

Kayangan Lake

It was a hike up for the view of this and a climb down to the Kayangan lake where the Life jacket party is on. The crowd of people are all having fun even though it was raining and all wet. Even our cameras, well. Thanks to Olympus Waterproof camera, I don’t have to worry about it getting all soaked.

Our tour went on even though it was all drizzling and windy. Next we went to Twin Peak, then another coral garden. I was feeling a little bit cold already so I didn’t bother to go for a swim anymore but my friend Noel didn’t want to miss the experience so there he goes swimming in the rain.More so, I’ve noticed, the waters here are habitats for umpteen Sea Urchins so it is really important to be careful not to step on them because seriously it is painful and the best antidote for the pain is peeing on the affected part. HAHAHA Oh and Calamansi and vinegar helps as well.

Oh by the way, the tour also includes a sumptuous lunch and the food they served are really delicious. There’s liempo, seaweeds, fish and enseladang tagalog.

CYC BEACH

Moving on. Last stop CYC Beach, no need to wear for a life jacket here, thank God. The island has a beige color sand (I’m being specific here, ok) and it’s a habitat for a few Bakawan (Mangrove trees) and also animals like uhmm a dog and a cat which are being fed by the people who visit there every day. I can imagine how lonely they were in the island.

CYC BEACH
I love Koi for my Swimwear!

We met a few friendly tourist people like us, one of them is even a solo backpacker. Her name is Sarah who’s an architect and a graduate of UST. I really am envious of her, I really wanted to try backpacking alone and it is one of my bucket list . Someday, I will surely do that.

After the tour, we went straight back to our hotel and change immediately. We were hoping to catch the mass in St Agustin Parish since it’s a Sunday and the town of Coron is celebrating the feast of St. Agustin.

After the mass, me and Noel had an agreement to have this night off separately. We went on our personal “Alone-time” which is a  mundane sesh to my every trip. I had the chance to walk around and try the food in the town plaza and after which an old friend of mine from college who lives in Coron invited me to have dinner at Kawayanan Grill. He is an avid motorcyclist so I had my transpo free for the night. Yay to freebies.

We also toured the city for awhile before he dropped me off back to my hotel.

DAY 3

The next morning, we head again to Lualhati park to rent a boat for a half day tour to Twin Lagoon, Barracuda lake and Banol Beach supposedly.

BARRACUDA LAKE

Our first destination is Barracuda Lake, it is 80% fresh water and 20% salt and a very unique lake with its varying temperatures of the water ranging from 29 degrees from surface to 12meters to 31-41 degrees. It is very refreshing to swim here not only for the water but also for the picturesque scenery which is surrounded by different limestone rock formations. Ah, perfect haven! I could just relax here all day.

On the other hand, Being curious why it is called Barracuda lake, I asked about it to the boat man and according to him it is called Barracuda Lake because hiding in its very deep water lives a humongous barracuda fish. Well, lucky me I didn’t see him face to face or else I’d be totally freaked out to swim forever. Kidding. But seriously, I googled barracuda fish and It looks scary. So, thank God I didn’t see him. Anyhow, according to the tourist guide it is very rare that people see the barracuda fish in the lake even to divers.

TWIN LAGOON

Next stop, Twin Lagoon.

A very tranquil and serene place to swim. There was a nice traverse here, you may pass through under the rock formation which is approximately 6-7 feet deep (I recommend this if you hate climbing up and down) or through a ladder only for thin people (kidding). Truly lovely.

Twin Lagoon

After Twin Lagoon, we were suppose to go to Banol Beach however on our way, we encountered a unique kind of storm-ish in the sea, they call it Subasco. It lasted for about 30-45 minutes. It was raging and looks like a storm that almost turned our boat upside down, good thing our boatmen are very alert. It was one hell of a ride and I will never forget the Subasco day in Coron. It made the “adventure” in my Coron trip!

For our 3rd night in Coron, we spent it with RR and his family because it’s San Miguel Night with free beers (yahoo) and entertaining singers at the town plaza (this is wholesome, ok) 🙂 Yes to free beers!! For midnight snack, we went to Foodtrip restaurant near Lualhati Park for a delicious Goto (Congee) care of RR Palanca again. Yess to freebies. Such a very accommodating friend, he’s really amazing! 🙂

It was a lovely night and sadly our last night in Coron, Palawan.

Our last day in Coron did not pass without souvenirs, I got myself a shout out shirt which says “Never Stop Exploring.” Indeed, we should never stop exploring because life is a big adventure. André Gide a french author and a Nobel Prize winner once said “It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves – in finding themselves.”

Puerto Galera in July

Sometime in July, my colleagues and I decided to book a trip going to Puerto Galera for an overnight stay. We were afraid that we wouldn’t be able to utilize our perks and end up staying in the hotel because the month of July is a rainy season in the Philippines but we took our chance anyway. Luckily our trip was super blessed. Upon reaching our hotel resort  El Canonero, the sky suddenly lit up and Mr Sun came in just in time.

A very friendly owner who is Italian welcomed us warmly and gave us our welcome drinks. It was a Sunday in July and a non peak, thus making our stay truly worth the IMPULSIVENESS.

Just to give you a quick tour here’s what we did during our quick 2 day trip.

We left Manila by Bus at around 6am . The sky is cloudy and it just started to drizzle when we arrived at the port of Batangas at 9am. There are several men who will approach you, ask your destination and offer you packages for the boat. Well the thing about these men is they put a huge mark up on the price of the boat, so piece of advice, walk straight until you reach the booths and take it from there. Normally the price for the boat is 500 PHP ( roughly 12 USD) per head round trip. So, not bad huh.

The pool is really tempting and the sea is inviting. We changed our clothes immediately and went straight to the beach. Well, the shore is a bit rocky with pebbles, the kind of rocks which are not really that hard and rough. They are actually smooth you can’t even use it for scrubbing dead skins and callouses on your soles. 🙂 HAHA.

trio

Mariz, Chiara and Me – Having fun at the Beach. Look how serene and calm the sea is? Yeah, it’s is totally relaxing.

During the evening, we walked on the beach with a  tour guide named Kuya Eric, he is really friendly. We walked from El Canonero Resort down to White Beach the place where the night is young and alive. There were fire dancers (truly awesome performers) and gay impersonators (some are not really funny, I think they should try more).

Moving on, It was a 30 minute walk but it’s worth all the effort. Upon reaching the White Beach, we looked for some place we could eat since it was already past dinner and all of us are already starving. There are several establishments which offers good food at a very affordable price. I had my dinner at 45 php. (apprx 1.00 USD) . Trinkets and souvenir shops are also available at the White Beach. We stayed there for a while until we had decided to continue our long talks at  our hotel. Again as we continue our walk from White Beach to El Canonero, we noticed that the road going there was totally dark and spooky . This was actually the climax of this trip because we got to talk about scary stuff as we passed by huge trees, heard screeching sounds and shadows unknown. (Kidding, no Shadows).

At our resort we stayed at the beach until 1 am, (My favorite sesh every time I’m going on a vacation). We saw some shooting stars and yes it was a lovely night.

The day after, our breakfast is ready and we are ready for our guided tour to Talipanan Waterfalls. Approximately a 45 minute hike from the foot of the mountain to the water falls. Without my Wallawalla ankle high Columbia I thought I wouldn’t make it, I was a bit skeptic with my FitFlop but the good news is my Fitflop made it just fine. No sliding and slipping.

IMG_1053

We passed by the Mangyan Village. They are very welcoming people. They are also very courteous to the visitors.

Mangyan Village

The falls was just about 15 ft tall. It was actually my first time to swim in the waterfalls. So much for my “first time” experiences this year huh. I’m very happy to say that while it’s my first time to swim in a waterfalls, It’s not actually my first time to see one, Okay.

Talipanan Waterfalls
Talipanan Waterfalls

The water is cold and refreshing. There were big boulders of rock which could naturally transform into a big slide when it’s wet since it is very slippery.

To me, this trip is actually a breath of fresh air from the usual. I like this one because my colleagues are thrifty people (stingy actually, I just made it sound subtle) in a very good way. They made me appreciate travelling even more. Experiencing goodness at a very affordable price. If I were to compare this trip from my previous vacations I think this one will be number one my list of the most S-U-L-I-T  (getting more value from what you’ve paid for) unforgettable trip.

We ended our trip with a quick snorkeling at the beach before we checked out. That sums up our quickie 2 days 1 night trip to Puerto Galera.

I’d like to recommend Kuya Eric as a tour guide. He’s actually a great one.

Throwback: Summer Camp 2013

Summer 2013. For a change, we ditched the luxury of a hotel accommodation and went on a breath taking nature camp trip in Zambales. The lush of green pine trees beside the blue shore, the freshness of the wind that touches my skin, the twilight which illuminated the vast mountain in orange at sun down, then at night time, the ocean of stars covering the sky as they twinkle above me perhaps telling me how wonderful the night is. Truly magnificent; a trip to remember.

Anawangin Cove – is one of the popular destination for camping in Zambales. It is actually a good place to think and relax because of the serene place. By the way there is no electricity in Anawangin so better charge your cameras in full. While your phone is safe to be turned off because mobile networks are also not within reach.

Coming from Manila via Van, we reached Pundaquit Zambales in 3 hours we didn’t even use the SCTEX on our way. Good thing we left Manila at 3 am. Thanks to our friendly driver Jonathan who drives like Frank Martin in the movie transporter. Oh and I’m kidding. He’s actually a safe driver. Upon reaching Zambales, we went to the market first to buy stuff we needed for our camp, the meat, fish and so so. We brought our own camping stove and other supplies so it will be more convenient for us.

To go to Anawangin,  we headed to the boat for a 30 minute boat ride. There were a few islands you’re going to see during the boat ride so make sure you have your cameras ready with you. You definitely don’t wanna miss the different rock formations, mountains and sea shores on the islands you’re going to pass by.

Boat ride to Anawangin
Boat ride to Anawangin

Welcoming us are the row of Pine trees in the cove and underneath them stood the tents of the other groups of people who are going to spend the night away and those who are just spending the day. There are actually so much ways on how to have a good  and calm way of relaxing in Anawangin, One is sleeping on the tent and taking advantage of the tranquility of the area or you can just “swing your nap away” by tying a hammock between two trees then voila you’re off for a nice serene siesta.

With me are my college friends, Noel, Maan + Ron, Yayi + Jin, Liez + Gerald, Diana + Rael (I know, I Forgot to mention about their plus one except for the two of us, me and noel)

The funny thing is even though I’m the only single girl in the group I find it surprisingly really “nakakakilig” (warm and fuzzy) to see them with their plus ones. They’re all different with their plus one. (Ehem I’m not being sarcastic. This is just me being observant and not bitter.) To be honest, I may have known them individually but with their partners, they were all totally different and It’s actually new to my eyes and I think it is wonderful. I’m happy for them and soon I will be happy for Noel. YAY!

Under the Pine trees
Under the Pine trees

Mean while, without anything to do yet, we took the liberty of walking around the coast and appreciating the goodness of God’s masterpiece but something horrible came to our sight and these are the scattered plastics, bottles and other unwanted remnants not disposed properly by the campers and these are the stuffs that are undeniably ruining the loveliness of the environment. Totally an eye sore. (Seriously, guys?)

Moving on, during the rest of the day, we kept ourselves busy by playing cards under the trees, chatting, sleeping and eating #likeaBoss. Anyway, what can we do? it’s too sunny and hot. Of course we know that too much exposure to sun is harmful to our skin. (UVA causes sunburns and UVB causes wrinkles, HAHA)

Sun's heat
Sun’s heat

At around 4P.M, we jumped immediately to the beach for our afternoon swim. Define A-W-E-S-O-M-E. Just swimming and swimming until the sun sets at the horizon beautifully. At 6pm we are already preparing our dinner and bonfire. Thanks to Ron who prepared most of the viands and me? I’m just there sitting pretty. Naaah. Me and Noel prepared the bonfire. So it was a lovely feast during the evening. There’s grilled pork, grilled fish, hotdogs, smores and ehem Tequila and Brandy. And YES, I’m totally in control of myself. I didn’t want to have the hang over that is why I skipped tequila and sipped just a few from that beehive brandy, after all what’s more fun is seeing all the craziness of the drunken people and then telling them all about their crazy stunts the morning after. I could imagine their faces. (hahaha MEAN). Well anyway, at the end of the day all of us had a great time and we all had so much fun. During most of my vacation, I usually end the night lying down under the night sky and waiting for a shooting star while having a deep heart to heart conversation with Him.  My favorite ALONE time. Good thing I was able to see a few shooting stars and had a great time talking to Him. yay!

The night ended great and I was able to sleep well. Forget the Bugs! I really don’t care about them that night.

The next day, me and my friends ate SPAM and hotdogs for breakfast then we went for a boat ride to Capones Island, one of the virgin islands in Zambales. It has white sand and a turquoise blue water. Tempting but don’t underestimate it because it’s basically just a short estimate of 5 meters from the shore before it becomes a 15 feet deep sea. You may wanna use a life jacket for a more relax swim, atleast you wouldn’t have to worry about sinking. Right. hahaha. 🙂

Capones Island

After spending an hour talking at the beach, we went back to our boat then headed back to the port where they picked us up for our ride back home.

So basically, that’s the sum of our quick weekend vacation in Anawangin, Zambales. I really had a great time with my college friends. Even though the details for the trip took me awhile to construct, It is still fun recalling all  the tiny bitsy details from the trip. 🙂 Till next vacation dear ones.

CLIMB 2013: MT. PULAG

Last November 2012 I went trekking to Mt Pico De Loro in Ternate, Cavite for the first time with my friend and a newbie  mountaineer like me, Hilary Mercado. It was one memorable climb to the peak as we could not imagine ourselves in the past, walking in a long winding rock filled wilderness trail of the Cavite mountain. But the challenging part of hiking did not stopped us from moving to another mountain, come January 26, 2013 we went for our next climb – Mt Maculot. Having a successful climb to the top of the rockies we continued the hike to the highest point of the mountain down for the traverse. So far, that was the most challenging trek for me as it requires pseudo hardcore rapelling and a tremendous effort to an unending climb up, not to mention the muddy trail filled with itchy “amorseco” sticking to my clothes. Oh and the fun part? Removing all of them! Seriously.

February – the month we planned for Mt. Pulag but wasn’t made possible due to the jampacked schedule for work and other stuff. Thus, moving the schedule for the month of April which made me expect a little less cold weather since it is summer, However I failed to prepare for the reality that even though it is summer and the heat in Metro Manila is moving 35-37 degrees, it will never be the same in Pulag which is the 2nd highest peak mountain in the Philippines with a height of 2922 MASL and a weather temperature dropping from ZERO to negative during night.

Hence the reality.

I’ve always believe that I’m made for cold weather. I can survive a day without coat in an ac room with a constant 16 degrees (so far a big deal for most people living in a tropical country) but that failed me during our camp in Mt Pulag. Next time I will not underestimate a climb especially Pulag. I would reminisce Pulag in its super-ka-duper cold weather state. Therefore, during the night – I was chillin’ to death with my tummy aching due to LBM added to my calvary, I couldn’t bare the coldness of the night thus sleeping in a seated position was my only option with two hands under my armpit. (FOR REAL) Our sleeping bag became wet because of the rain pouring as we climb our way to camp site 2 during the day.

Thankfully as we reached the camp site 2 we were able to see a beautiful double rainbow.

Image

The beautiful grassland and the cold wind touching my face – “oh this is it!” I said to myself. This was suppose to happen June 2012 with he-who-must-not-be-named and that is ok. Atleast I was able to fulfill it!

Honestly, my group thought that we were already prepared with our stuffs. But because of the heavy rain, our jacket, thermal and anything to keep us warm became wet and could never be use for comfort during the night. What was left of me is my furry jacket and a scarf with leggings and a semi – wet gloves and a thin socks which was good but was not enough for the night.

One of my tent-mate became sick during the night so I had to share my super thin scarf with him to be used as a blanket in addition to my suffering from LBM which made it really hard for me to endure the night. At 1 am I could no longer handle it so I brave the coldness of the wind and the moist grassy trail to the CR – which is called Latrine a type of toilet which was mostly used during the old days but still common especially in the most rural areas of the Philippines.

Passing thru the other tents and walking to the muddy soil and the misty grassy area – I can hear sounds of snore which made me miss the comfort of my bed and wishing that the night will be shorter than I had even imagined and I will feel the warmth of the sun in the morning and of course I wished there will be no snakes on my way to the Latrine. Lucky me.

After a struggling night of coldness and LBM – I survived. 4:30 am our team invited us for the sunrise – while I’m still at my deep sleep I said in a pseudo groggy phase – “I can’t it’s cold.” Unaware of what I would miss, I continued hugging myself to sleep. Then they left not realizing that this is my chance to see the sea of clouds. Oh no At 8 AM – all set and ready to go to the summit – but all troops are already on their way down with no available guide to accompany us – – – 😦 then we are doomed. We were not able to see the sea of clouds or reach the summit. – – – 😦 I did not want to make myself feel worse about it but I couldn’t help myself but to feel some piece of regret  of what I had just missed. Seriously, because of what happened I thought of contemplating some more while walking down the mountain. It is not only in this activity that I let my weak self forego a good opportunity. With that in mind, I now stand to my new mantra in life: Do it right the first time.

Meanwhile, after a couple of minutes, we talked to the organizer to request if we could follow the group to the summit but they declined our request but were honest enough to say that they sort of failed with the system of organizing the schedule. They were not able to announce the batches for the climb to the summit. There were 3 batches according to one of the team lead, 4:30, 5AM and 6 AM . We could have been at the 6am.

Image

GRATEFUL – after a couple of minutes two of the organizers finally agreed, we climbed to a higher part of the mountain so we could also see a set of Sea of Clouds even for a little part of it. This may seem as just a consolation for us but we also need to cut people some slack. I need not to feel bad about it or pissed with the sudden turn of events, thus another realization came to me: Always have the right spirit and gratitude.

This experience taught me about Mindfulness as well. Next time, I wouldn’t let the sleepy me rule my world and decide for my future. Kidding. Also the relentless source of bad feeling from regret sort of vanished eventually after I tasted the delicious local cuisine provided by the Arcobaleno Trailoutours from a local restaurant in Benguet. I just realized how much hungry I was.

That sums my Mt Pulag experience – and I’d like to go back there again in a much prepared set up. Hopefully the soonest. 🙂
